At Canine Rehabilitation & Conditioning Group (CRCG), we take an integrative approach to care—treating the whole dog, not just isolated symptoms. That’s why we offer Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine for dogs (TCVM) as part of our comprehensive rehabilitation and pain-management services. TCVM focuses on restoring balance within the body so it can heal, function, and move more comfortably over time.
By combining Eastern and Western medicine, we help dogs manage pain, improve mobility, and maintain a better quality of life.
What Is TCVM?
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine is a holistic medical system centered on identifying and correcting imbalances within the body that contribute to disease. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, TCVM works to identify and correct the underlying imbalance contributing to disease.
TCVM includes five core branches:
- Acupuncture
- Chinese Herbal Medicine
- Food Therapy
- Tui-Na (Chinese medical massage)
- Lifestyle & Exercise
At CRCG, we offer four of these five branches:
- Acupuncture
- Chinese Herbal Medicine
- Food Therapy (home-cooked diets only)
- Rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise
Each TCVM plan is customized based on a thorough medical history review and physical examination.
What to Expect During a TCVM Evaluation
A TCVM evaluation at CRCG is detailed and personalized. Appointments may last up to 90 minutes and typically include:
- Review of medical records and health history
- Identification of the TCVM pattern diagnosis (the root imbalance)
- Prognosis and treatment recommendations
- Acupuncture treatment when appropriate
This comprehensive process allows us to support the body’s natural healing mechanisms rather than simply managing symptoms.
Acupuncture: Supporting Balance and Healing
Chinese acupuncture uses very fine needles placed at specific points on the body to regulate:
- Qi (energy flow)
- Yin and Yang balance
- Blood circulation
Unlike Western acupuncture, which often targets localized pain points, Chinese acupuncture addresses the underlying imbalance contributing to disease. This approach helps reduce pain and stiffness, slow degenerative conditions, and improve overall function and comfort.
Electroacupuncture: Advanced Support for Complex Conditions
Electroacupuncture is a modern extension of acupuncture that applies a gentle electrical current through the needles. This technique enhances treatment effects by:
- Releasing endorphins and natural pain relief
- Improving circulation and nerve function
- Supporting tissue repair and regeneration
Electroacupuncture is commonly used for conditions such as arthritis, spinal disease, neurologic issues, hind-end weakness, and cruciate ligament injuries. It can also support certain internal medicine conditions, with very few contraindications.
Is TCVM Right for Your Dog?
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine offers a gentle, effective way to support dogs dealing with arthritis, chronic pain, neurologic conditions, and age-related mobility challenges. By restoring balance within the body, TCVM helps dogs feel better, move better, and enjoy life more fully.
